Life in the Mall

Ο τίτλος κυριολεκτεί.

Ένας τύπος βρήκε έναν κενό "τυφλό" χώρο περίπου 30 τετραγωνικών σε ένα τεράστιο Mall (στο Providence, US of A) και αποφάσισε να τον μετατρέψει σε κρυφό διαμέρισμα. Το δωμάτιο ήταν στο τεράστιο γκαράζ του mall και είχε χρησιμοποιηθεί κατά την ανέγερσή του ως βοηθητικός, αποθηκευτικός χώρος που αργότερα ξεχάστηκε.

Στους μήνες που ακολούθησαν, μετέφερε κρυφά και υπομονετικά περίπου 2 τόνους οικοδομικού υλικού, δηλαδή τούβλα, σανίδες και τσιμέντο για να φτιάξει έναν τοίχο και να κλείσει τελείως τον χώρο. Έβαλε μάλιστα και μια κανονική πόρτα. Επίπλωσε πλήρως το διαμέρισμα: τραπέζια, καναπέδες, καρέκλες. Έστησε δίκτυο ηλεκτρισμού και έβαλε λάμπες, τηλεόραση, PlayStation. Είχε αρχίσει να φτιάχνει την τουαλέτα και την δεξαμενή νερού όταν τον έπιασαν, τέσσερα χρόνια μετά.

Για τέσσερα χρόνια, ζούσε σε αυτό το κρυφό δωμάτιο, δίπλα από τους χιλιάδες που μπαινόβγαιναν σε αυτό το τεράστιο Mall ( 13 οροφοι και 4.000.000 τετραγωνικά πόδια έκταση). Ο κυριούλης αυτός (Townsend λέγεται), ετών 36, συλλήφθηκε με τις κατηγορίες παράνομης διανομής. Τον αφήσαν να φύγει τελικά, αλλά (προφανώς) απαγορεύεται πια να πατήσει πόδι στο mall.

Απορίες ενός Λόρδου

Μελετώντας το Tabula Rasa αυτό τον μήνα, για άλλη μια φορά βρέθηκα να θαυμάζω το έργο του Richard Garriot. Ο άνθρωπος που δημιούργησε την σειρά Ultima, που ίδρυσε την θρυλική (με όλη την σημασία της λέξης) Origin και που ουσιαστικά ξεκίνησε την εποχή των massive multiplayer online games με το Ultima Online, μεταμορφώθηκε από Lord British σε… General British για τις ανάγκες του νέου του ΜΜΟ. Το ότι ζει σε κάστρο και ότι κάνει βόλτες σε μια αγορασμένη από την NASA σεληνάκατο, δεν το αναλύουμε.

Ο Garriot είχε βρεθεί μπροστά σε μερικά πολύ σοβαρά ερωτήματα στις αρχές της δεκαετίας των 80, όταν τα RPG είχαν αρχίσει να διαδίδονται πολύ- τόσο μέσω των υπολογιστών, όσο και τον pen & paper, «επιτραπέζιων» παιχνιδιών ρόλων. Αρχικά υποτιμούσε τον τρόπο που αυτές οι φανταστικές ιστορίες επηρέαζαν τον κόσμο, αλλά με τον καιρό άκουγε ολοένα και περισσότερες ιστορίες και μαρτυρίες, αλλά και καταγγελίες ανήσυχων ανθρώπων. Συνειδητοποίησε ότι, εν μέρει, αυτές οι ανησυχίες είχαν κάποια βάση: στην ουσία το στερεότυπο των RPG υπαγορεύει στον πρωταγωνιστή ότι είναι «ο καλός ήρωας» και ότι θα πρέπει να βρει τους «κακούς», να τους σκοτώσει και να κλέψει τα πράγματά τους. Ο Garriot όμως αναρωτήθηκε: γιατί οι «κακοί» είναι αληθινά κακοί, αφού στην ουσία το μόνο που κάνουν είναι να στέκονται υπομονετικά σε ένα σκοτεινό μπουντρούμι, περιμένοντας τον «ήρωα» να τους σκοτώσει;

Βάζοντας στο εξώφυλλο του Ultima VΙΙΙ μια τεράστια πεντάλφα, o Garriot προσπάθησε να προκαλέσει εγκεφαλικά τον κόσμο, να μας κάνει να ψαχτούμε και να μάθουμε ότι αυτό το σύμβολο μέχρι τον 14ο αιώνα ήταν ιερό και «καλό» και κοσμούσε μάλιστα πολλές καθολικές εκκλησίες. Λόγω πολιτικών και οικονομικών διατριβών, το σύμβολο αυτό υποβαθμίστηκε από τον Βασιλιά της Γαλλίας και πια σημαίνει κάτι το κακό και σατανικό. Παρόμοια, δημιουργώντας το σύστημα των virtues (εμπνευσμένο ελαφρώς από βουδιστικές διδαχές), ο Garriot και πάλι μας θέτει μπροστά σε ηθικά διλήμματα, μας βάζει να χρησιμοποιούμε το μυαλό μας, όχι απλά να πατάμε συνεχόμενα κλικ: τι είναι σωστό και τι είναι λάθος; Τι επιπτώσεις έχουν οι πράξεις μας, τι μήνυμα μας αφήνει η εμπειρία του παιχνιδιού και πώς επηρεάζεται ο κόσμος από την συμπεριφορά μας;

Ευτυχώς υπάρχουν μερικοί που δεν σταματούν να θέτουν ερωτήματα…

Πρέπει να είμαι ο μοναδικός έλλην μπλόγκερ που δεν έχει γράψει το δικό του δριμύ κατηγορώ, την δική του εξιστόρηση του μήνα που πέρασε, όλο γλαφυρές εκφράσεις με πολυσύλλαβες περιγραφές για τις φωτιές.

Holiday

Σας αφιερώνω το τραγουδάκι, λίγο πριν κλείσουμε για διακοπές.

Πρόκειται για ένα από τα πιο special τραγούδια που έχω ακούσει ποτέ μου, ενός γκρουπ απο τo Brisbane, Australia που λέγονται george. Όσο κι αν ψάξω, δεν βρίσκω πουθενά το CD τους, κρίμα. Η κοπέλα λέγεται Kate Noonan και δεν μπορώ να σκεφτώ κάποια λέξη ή και φράση που να μπορεί να περιγράψει την φωνή της. Νομίζω οτι θα σας αρέσει.

Άρχισα να βλέπω LOST πάλι. Το είχα παρατήσει στην αρχή της τρίτης σεζόν, αλλά τώρα βλέπω πάλι.

Ναι, βλέπω LOST πάλι.

Δεν με χάλασε.

KNEssence

Μια φορά κι έναν καιρό, μια κάποια very special ψυχή με τραβολογούσε [disclaimer:με την καλή έννοια] σε ένα μεγάλο event που διοργάνωνε η ΚΝΕ, στο Πεδίο του Άρεως νομίζω ήταν; Μπορεί να κάνω και λάθος. Τέλος πάντων, εγώ με ΚΝΕ και τέτοια δεν έχω καμμία σχέση, βασικά δεν ασχολούμαι καθόλου με την πολιτική, δεν έχω ψηφίσει ποτέ στην ζωή μου. Ούτε και η κοπέλα ήταν (είναι) της ΚΝΕ. Η ατραξιόν ήταν ένα συγκρότημα που είχαν φέρει, τους οποίους εγώ δεν ήξερα, αλλά ευτυχώς έμαθα. Να φύγει το βίντεο, παρακαλώ.



Τρυπώσαμε έτσι στην χώρα των αξύριστων, μακρυμάλληδων, με στρογγυλά γυαλάκια, περίεργα πλεκτά καπελάκια, κολιέδες με χάντρες και άπειρες μπλούζες-τσε. Πολύς κόσμος, χαμός παιδιά, εμείς τρυπώσαμε τσάμπα. Είχε και είσοδο, 4-5 ευρώ θα ήταν, αλλά μην τρελαθούμε, σιγά μην δώσουμε και λεφτά στην ΚΝΕ, νο οφένς. Δεν λέω, είχαν κάτι ωραία stands που και που, με καλλιτεχνικές/φιλοσοφικές ανησυχίες, αποκόμματα, εργαστήρια χειροτεχνίας, ψητά καλαμπόκια και αρκετή κόκα (κόλα) και διάφορα άλλα. Και καλό είναι να μην καταδικάζουμε πριν ακούσουμε, να είμαστε ανοικτοί σε μηνύματα και τα λοιπά, αλλά πραγματικά, δεν νομίζω οτι θα πήγαινα ποτέ σε τέτοια εκδήλωση αν δεν υπήρχε το θέμα του θέματος. Ε, για να μην πολυλογώ, βγήκαν και οι Puressence οι οποίοι τελικά μου άρεσαν αρκετά, αποτέλεσαν μια πολύ ευχάριστη έκπληξη/ανακάλυψη για μένα, οπότε άξιζε τον κόπο η όλη μανούβρα.

Αν σας άρεσε, google/torrent/youtube it... puressence λέγονται, έξω δεν τους ξέρει κανείς, αλλά στην Ελλάδα μας έχουν ένα κοινό. Ψάξτε το Mr.Brown, India, How does it feel. Δεν θα τρελαθούμε κιόλας, απλά είναι ένα ευχάριστο άκουσμα. Και σίγουρα, αξιοπρεπέστατη δικαιολογία για ποστ :)

ΤΟ ΙΝΤΕΡΝΕΤ

Το λατρεύω το Ίντερνετ.

Μάλλον θα πρέπει να το θέσω διαφορετικά. Λατρεύω τον τρόπο που επηρεάζει τους ανθρώπους, σε όλους τους τομείς. Ακόμα περισσότερο μου αρέσει να παρατηρώ τα κάθε λογής περίεργα και αστεία που δημιουργούνται, από ακρωνύμια και φαινόμενα, μέχρι συμπεριφορές, νέες λέξεις που δημιουργούνται για πλάκα, κουλτούρες και urban legends. Από κάτι το τόσο απλό όπως ένα LOL και ματάκια που κλαίνε (QQ) μέχρι τεράστιους πίνακες από ASCII art και 1337-$p34K (με τα απαραίτητα θαυμαστικά και το 1), απίστευτες περσόνες όπως ο I LIEK MILK και ο Μαχίρ I KISS YOU!!! (που ενέπνευσε σίγουρα και τον Μπόρατ) μέχρι και τα μπονζάι-γατάκια, άπειρες πειραγμένες φωτογραφίες με τέρατα και φαντάσματα, ολόκληρα site με LOLcats ή πειράγματα όπως το Rickrolling.




Ακόμα και τούτο δω το ρημάδι (το blogspot ντε), αλλά και σε επέκταση όλο το blogging concept έχει φοβερό ενδιαφέρον να το παρατηρείς: έχεις τους emo τύπους, μέσα στην θλίψη και τον σπαραγμό, έχεις show-off γκόμενες που την ψάχνουν και προσποιούνται οτι διαβάζουν Κάφκα, έχεις κάθε καρυδιάς καρύδι. Σε άλλους τόπους όπως myspace/hi5 έχεις περισσότερους SDK (show offs/desperates/καμμένοι), αλλά κι αυτοί την πλάκα τους κάνουν, μωρέ. Δεν κατηγορούμε κανέναν, κανείς δεν έχει άδικο και όλα μέσα στο παιχνίδι είναι. Kαθένας έχει το δικαίωμα να κάνει ό,τι μα ό,τι γουστάρει στον χωροχρόνο του, αρκεί να μην ενοχλεί τον άλλο... απλά μας αρέσει να παρατηρούμε και να καταγράφουμε την κουλτούρα που τ-

A variant on the duckroll. Allegedly hilarious.

...so instead of getting to beat off to footage of Ann Coulter getting raped by hyenas, I got rickrolled. What a day!

Ένα μικρό παράδειγμα για αυτό που προσπαθώ να αποτυπώσω. Είναι απίστευτο που από το πουθενά, δημιουργήθηκε λήμμα ξεχωριστό για κάτι το τόσο συγκεκριμένο και γελοίο. Είναι ρήμα και ουσιαστικό το Rickroll, πάει, τελείωσε. Δημιουργήθηκε μια ολόκληρη, νέα λέξη για να περιγράψει αυτό το πράγμα! Τρελαίνομαι! Είναι πολύ περίεργο πώς κάτι ξεκινάει από κάτι το πολύ μικρό και ηλίθιο και γίνεται τεράστιο και μέρος ενός παγκόσμιου κώδικα :)

ΕDIT: Πριν καλά-καλά αρχειοθετηθεί και καταγραφεί το νέο meme, το κοινό του Family Guy έλαβε το μερίδιό του στο RickRolling!!

Καλό Μήνα

Τα νέα μου: μια αμυγδαλίτιδα με 40 πυρρετό, δύο απονευρώσεις, δύο μήνες ακόμα μέχρι τον Αύγουστο (και τρία τεύχη που πρέπει να κλείσουμε μέχρι τότε), κανένα μπάνιο μέχρι στιγμής. Πέμπτη μέρα χωρίς ιντερνέτι στο σπίτι μου, αλλά σκασίλα μου, έξι μέρες μέχρι τα γενέθλιά μου, επίσης ψιλο-σκασίλα μου, 29 χρόνια ζωής σε αυτόν τον κόσμο. Εξήντα ευρώ χρειάστηκα ευτυχώς για μια μικρο-επισκευή της μηχανής που γλύστρισε στην Εθνική- περίπου 400 υπολογίζω για να φτιάξω μια μπουκάλα, το φτερό, σπασμένους καθρέφτες, μανέτες, σέρβις λάδια, λαμπάκια και ψιλοκοκό που έχουν μαζευτεί. Δέκα ημέρες έχω να πάω γυμναστήριο και 260 ευρώ πρέπει να δώσω για την συνδρομή μου. Φτάνει με τα αριθμητικά δεδομένα, αγχώθηκα λιγάκι.

Nerdy update ψυχαγωγίας: διαβάζω την Χρυσή Πυξίδα του Πούλμαν (φανταζόμαστε όλοι την σουρεάλ εικόνα με μια τεράστια πυξίδα σε ένα, σχολικό και κίτρινο κατά προτίμηση, πούλμαν)... πήρα και το εκπληκτικό Bathroom Reader αλλά το φιλάω για το καλοκαιράκι και την παραλία. Παίζω Neverwinter Nights 2 (τόσο με το campaign όσο και με τον editor, σχεδιάζω έναν Loviatar Temple αυτόν τον καιρό, για τον persistent word της Anphillia II). Παρακολούθησα πρόσφατα: Pirates of the Caribbean, Sorry Haters και την πέμπτη σεζόν του Family Guy. Μουσικά, έχω σκαλώσει και ακούω ξανά Ugly Kid Joe, ένα απίστευτα παρεξηγημένο συγκρότημα που πλασαρίστηκε μάλλον άσχημα marketing-wise και δεν αναγνωρίστηκε η πολύ όμορφη μουσικούλα του.

Παρεπιμπτόντως, σύμφωνα με το τεστάκι που δημοσίευσε η Fish-bait, είμαι ένας κουλ dark unicorn.

Αμαλία και το 'Φακελάκι'. Εκτός από την εκρηκτική μαρτυρία της, είναι αν μην τι άλλο εντυπωσιακός ο τρόπος που ένα μπλογκ κατάφερε να ακουστεί τόσο δυνατά. Καλό ταξίδι...

ΟΤΕ εναντίον ΦΟΥΡΝΩΝ: 1-0

"Κοιτάξτε, είναι η τρίτη φορά που η σύνδεση έχει πρόβλημα αυτό το μήνα..."

Γενικότερα δεν είμαι ο τύπος που θα βάλει τις φωνές και θα κάνει υστερίες. Είμαι περισσότερο των πράξεων, ήρεμα και ωραία, παρά της έντασης. Σε αυτή την περίπτωση για παράδειγμα, έχω ήδη αποφασίσει οτι θα αλλάξω internet provider και μάλιστα άμμεσα. Οπότε πραγματικά, δεν έχω λόγο να είμαι αναστατωμένος, το αντίθετο μάλιστα: έχω την ηρεμία εκείνου που ξέρει ήδη κάτι που έχει αποφασιστεί. Το απαθές ύφος του τεχνικού, ο οποίος εκπροσωπεί την ίδια την εταιρεία την στιγμή που μιλάμε, δεν κάνει κάτι για να μου προκαλέσει τύψεις.

"Ναι, το βλέπω εδώ...", μουρμουρίζει και ακούω κάτι κλίκι-κλίκι από πίσω. Στο μυαλό μου φαντάζομαι τον τεχνικό, έναν πιτσιρικά που σιγορουφάει έναν φραπέ και κοιτάζει ποιο torrent να κατεβάζει, να γέρνει την SATO του προς τα πίσω και να προσπαθεί να μην χασμουρηθεί.

"Ωραία, υπάρχει κάτι που μπορούμε να κάνουμε σας παρακαλώ;". Είμαι σίγουρος οτι η ψυχραιμία μου και η σταθερότητα της φωνής μου του προκαλεί εντύπωση. Ποιος ξέρει πόσες χριστοπαναγίες έχει ακούσει ο torrent-guy σήμερα.

"Κοιτάξτε, πρέπει να είναι πρόβλημα συγχρονισμού. Κάτι με τον κόμβο της περιοχής σας... θα ενημερώσω τον ΟΤΕ και βλέπουμε".

"Καλώς, σας ευχαριστώ πολύ", λέω και το κλείνω. Δεν είμαι εκνευρισμένος, ίσα-ίσα που θα γλιτώσω και χρήματα, αφού με χρέωναν περισσότερα από τους συνηθισμένους providers. Το μόνο που με κρατούσε τόσο καιρό ήταν ο φόβος οτι θα μείνω χωρίς σύνδεση για 1-2 (3...4) εβδομάδες μέχρι να ενεργοποιηθεί ξανά. So what?

Τέλος πάντων, long story short (και φτάνουμε στον λόγο που με έβαλε στην διαδικασία να γράψω). Είμαι στο γραφείο και με παίρνουν στο κινητό. Απόκρυψη. Ποτέ δεν σηκώνω όταν καλεί άγνωστος αριθμός και απόκρυψη (υπάρχουν και ενοχλητικοί, stalkers, κτλ), αλλά ποτέ δεν μπορεί να είσαι σίγουρος, μπορεί να είναι κάποιο επείγον περιστατικό.

"Γειά σας, από τον ΟΤΕ καλώ, έχετε κάποια βλάβη. Θα θέλατε να μιλήσουμε λιγάκι για να δούμε ποιο είναι το πρόβλημα;"

ΗΘΙΚΟ ΔΙΔΑΓΜΑ: Πάρτε ψωμιά, πάρτε πολλά ψωμιά. Δεν θα βρείτε όρθιους φούρνους.

Κουφώματα (PRICELESS)

Καλό Μήνα

Πρωτομαγιά σήμερα.

Μας μένουν δηλαδή 37 ημέρες μέχρι τα γενέθλιά μου, 46 ημέρες μέχρι την επόμενη αργία (Αγίου Πνεύματος) και 90 ημέρες μέχρι τις διακοπές. Μέσα στον Μάιο πρέπει να ξεμπερδέψω επιτέλους με το δίπλωμα οδήγησης (α, και να βγάλω νέα ταυτότητα- το παλιό διαβατήριο και η παλιά ταυτότητα δεν μου επιτρέπουν πια να βγω από την χώρα), ενώ πρέπει να εντείνω και το πρόγραμμα γυμναστικής/διατροφής.

Heads up λοιπόν και είθε όλοι οι στόχοι που βάλετε να επιτευχθούν :)

Nα τι γράφω αυτή την στιγμή...

Hellgate: Athens

Τις λεπτομέρειες για το εκπληκτικό Hellgate: London που είδατε στο εξώφυλλο, θα τις διαβάσετε στο cover story μας. Εδώ ήθελα απλά να αναφέρω κάτι για την έξυπνη ονομασία του τίτλου, η οποία κάνει τα sequels εύκολη υπόθεση. Απλά αντικαθιστάς το London με οποιαδήποτε πόλη της αρεσκείας σου… Hellgate: Paris, Hellgate: Washington, Hellgate: Rome. Μεγάλη επιτυχία… φανταστείτε τα πιο γνωστά αξιοθέατα του κόσμου μέσα από το πρίσμα της post-nuclear κόλασης.



Για μισό λεπτάκι… γιατί να μην βάλουμε εμπρός να φτιάξουμε το δικό μας Hellgate: Athens; Ταλέντα έχουμε (όπως είδαμε στο προηγούμενο τεύχος με το Theseis και σε αυτό που κρατάτε στα χέρια σας με το Darkfall). Μια κρατική επιχορήγηση να εξασφαλίσει κάποιος και δέσαμε. Θα περάσουμε και στην επιστημονική φαντασία αν γίνει κι αυτό.

Όπως το φαντάζομαι, το Hellgate: Athens θα μπορούσε να έχει διάφορα levels. Σίγουρα θα πρέπει να συμπεριλάβουμε τα τούνελ κάτω από τον Εθνικό Κήπο, την υπόγεια μυστική Ακρόπολη και γενικότερα όλο το σύμπλεγμα υπόγειων περασμάτων τύπου Κούφια Γη.. Η στοά του Αρδηττού, ο Λυκαβηττός, ο μυστηριώδης Ιλισσός, η all-time classic Σπηλιά του Νταβέλη που συνδέεται φυσικά με κάθε σπήλαιο στον κόσμο σαν μαγικό gateway και βεβαίως, δεκάδες ανώνυμα αρχαία υδραγωγεία, σήραγγες, υπόγεια ποτάμια και αρχαία, θαμμένα νεκροταφεία. Βάλε μέσα και κατακόμβες, κρυφά τούνελ επί Τουρκοκρατίας, λίγο και από ATTIKO Μετρό για να δέσει με το 2007…και υπάρχει αρκετό υλικό για πολλά expansions στο Hellgate: Athens. Εντάξει, με τον καιρό (για να μην μου κάνει παράπονα κανείς) θα βγάλουμε και Content Packs για Hellgate: Thessalonica, Hellgate: Larissa και πάει λέγοντας. Σύμφωνοι, «Ελλάδα δεν είναι μόνο Αθήνα», αλλά από κάπου πρέπει να αρχίσει η εισβολή του εξαποδώ.

Από τέρατα , θα αντλήσουμε από την αστείρευτη σύγχρονη μυθολογία μας (μην βάλουμε πάλι Κύκλωπες και Κέρβερους, κλισέ έχει γίνει)… Υποχθόνιοι, βρίλ και… γκριλ, λάμιες και λαμόγια, βουρβούλακες και βουλευτές, αλλοδαποί και αερικά. Ε, θα βάλουμε μέσα και κάποια μυστική αδελφότητα που κάνει πειράματα εκεί κάτω, μια οργάνωση με κρυφά μυστικά ανείπωτης δύναμης. Σκέφτομαι κάποιο αλλόκοτο όνομα όπως «ΟΤΕ» αλλά ψάχνω για κάτι πιο μυστικιστικό.

Το τελικό στάδιο είναι σίγουρο ότι θα διαδραματίζεται στην πραγματική Κόλαση- γωνία Πατησίων και Πανεπιστημίου, κατακαλόκαιρο (όχι όμως Αύγουστο που έχει φύγει ο πολύς ο κόσμος, κάπου στον Ιούλιο μέσα). Το combo effect ζέστης, πολυκοσμίας και καυσαερίου είναι ό,τι πρέπει για εξτρά δυσκολία. Για ακόμα πιο έντονη αίσθηση survival horror, τα νερά και αναψυκτικά θα πωλούνται πάλι σε διπλάσιες τιμές, οπότε θα πρέπει να είσαι πάρα πολύ προσεκτικός στην διαχείριση νερού και πυρομαχικών.

Δεν είναι τίποτα, λίγη φαντασία χρειάζεται…

Όπως και να έχει, λένε οι φήμες οτι θα παίξει κυρίως δικά του τραγούδια, αλλά και κάποια από Λεντ Ζεπ. Και προσπαθούσα χτες να σκεφτώ, σε μια συζήτηση που είχα, αν ήταν να παίξει τρία μόνο τραγούδια από Λ.Ζ., ποια θα ήθελα να ήταν αυτά.

Αδύνατο.

Και το ανεβάσαμε λιγάκι, το κάναμε πέντε τραγούδια.

Αδύνατο και πάλι. Αλλά είπαμε να το περιορίσουμε εκεί.

This week: IRA (wrath)

Wrath may be described as inordinate and uncontrolled feelings of hatred and anger. These feelings can manifest as vehement denial of the truth, both to others and in the form of self-denial, impatience with the procedure of law, and the desire to seek revenge outside of the workings of the justice system (such as engaging in vigilantism), fanatical political beliefs, and generally wishing to do evil or harm to others. Δεν μπορώ να καταλάβω γιατί το κάνω αυτό: γράφω ένα τεράστιο κατεβατό χωρίς παύση, το ξαναδιαβάζω και μου φαίνεται τόσο σαχλό που το σβήνω. Και μετά καταλήγω στην short version. The vast majority of those i bought at some bargain-bin, from PLAY.COM Sales or for a ridiculously low price, many, many months after its initial release. The only one i paid its normal, full price at launch was World of Warcraft. Just some info there, so you won't think i'm a nerd or something *COUGH*

300.... and more

So, yes, I watched 300.

When I finished reading the comic, a few years back, I remember actually wiping tears from my eyes. When I finished watching this film (I’m toying with the idea of using the term ‘really long video-clip'), I was similarly touched, especially during the last 5 minutes, but my eyes were far from moist.

The only beef I had with the film adaptation was Gorgo’s part in the development of the story. The added scenes (that is, the scenes that were not in the graphic novel), took the story a few paces off its target, inputting factors and side-stories (and characters) that felt obsolete, like they were just thrown in to (hastily) commercially complete the product. In other words, for me, the character of Gorgo was included just to get more ladies in the cinema (as if Gerard Butler was not enough). Furthermore, I feel that the existence of a second traitor in one film was too much, all the while diminishing the tragic role of Ephialtis who is the traitor in this story. In all, I feel like the director took a few unnecessary liberties with the script- but that is not to say that he does not deserve compliments for an excellent long video-clip, with stunning effects and cinematography. As an adaptation from a graphic novel i would say that 300 is almost a masterpiece.

As for the fantasy elements, the grotesque monster-like slaves, the… persogres, the rhinos/elephants, the ninja-immortals, all that… it’s just extreme images meant to capture the imagination. In addition, it helped me form the image of a vast, vast empire of thousands of nations… a huge army that moved and absorbed miraculous warriors and unique creatures as it swallowed nations whole. So, yes, on the way, ninjas joined its ranks, as well as savages, shamans, nomads and African tribes- sure, why not? It should also be noted that the medium of graphic novels was always based on exaggerations and hyperboles, on surreal and extreme approaches (although the last two decades have witnessed a complete 180 degree turn in this notion, with works like Alan Moore’s The Watchmen beating down on the stereotypical superhero model). In other words: this was based on a graphic novel. This has been written/said many times, but it’s really what it’s all about. Don’t ever, ever expect to take accurate history lessons from a major blockbuster (even less when it’s based on a graphic novel). It’s basically mythology mixed with some selected pieces of History- one can easily argue that Spartans were not that high in the morality section: how humane is it to kill the cripple newborn, to live for death? Were they ‘noble warriors of the light that defended the weak and protected justice” or just merciless, killing machines of no culture? What do I think? Like I wrote before- I just see both sides of the same coin. Truth be told, when I visited the tomb of Thermopylae, I felt like approaching a holy site- I almost instinctively crossed myself before realizing that this has nothing to do with Christianity (duh). But it’s so awe-inspiring that I caught myself using this ultimate expression of respect.



Some Greeks here feel insulted. It’s not that the film does not portray the courageous efforts of their ancestors (every nation has the right to feel proud when its History inspires the world); they feel that this almost holy affair has been used as a propaganda vessel, as a parallel between the strong, courageous West fighting the evil East, ignoring the laws. This here is a very delicate issue; generally I tend to see both sides of the coin though. While this hypothesis reeks of paranoia and near-sightedness, I read somewhere that the film was sponsored by the US government. What was that? Did Jack Snyder deliberately film this specific adaptation to instill feelings of militarism to the masses (especially when its target audience was, let’s face it, males 18 to 28?). Or is it possible that, if you are paranoid enough, you can see propaganda everywhere? In some kind of distorted prism, can’t any single story be used as a propaganda tool?

One thing is sure- the other offended party, Iran, should not feel offended. No one could ever possibly dare of offending their cultural and their ancestors, as it was truly a magnificent culture that affected in a positive way the shaping of this earth’s culture. This is a war that took place 2.500 years ago, and although there was an attacker and a defender, no one can put labels on who the ‘bad guys’ and ‘good guys’ were. Really, Tehran should not be offended. It’s like NASA feeling offended at Star Wars .

What pains me the most is that the one who is furthest from that model, is the modern greek. His only concern is how to make his car go faster, how many coffees he can drink basking in the sun, if his favorite soccer team wins and how much work he can skip without getting caught. The main daily target, at any given time, is to make it through the next greek holiday, which is always tied with large quantities of food and drink. Our accomplishments are so trivial that we have to look back three thousand years ago for inspiring deeds to marvel.

This Week: AVARITIA (avarice/greed)

From wiki: Greed is, like Lust and Gluttony, a sin of excess. However, Greed (as seen by the Church) applied to the acquisition of wealth in particular. Thomas Aquinas wrote that Greed was "a sin against God, just as all mortal sins, in as much as man condemns things eternal for the sake of temporal things." In Dante's Purgatory, the penitents were forced to kneel on hard stone and recite the examples of avarice and its opposing virtue. "Avarice" is more of a blanket term that can describe many other examples of sinful behavior. These include disloyalty, deliberate betrayal, or treason, especially for personal gain, as the case when someone lets oneself be bribed. Scavenging and hoarding of materials or objects, theft and robbery, especially by means of violence, trickery, or manipulation of authority are all actions that may be inspired by greed. Such misdeeds can include Simony, where one profits from soliciting goods within the actual confines of a church.

ΟΤΙΝΑΝΑΙ #1

'Δεν έχω έμπνευση, παππούλη!’

Το ξανθό αγόρι κοίταξε τον γέρο με μάτια τόσο μεγάλα
που όλος ο κόσμος θαρρούσες ότι χωράει μέσα τους.
Τα μικροσκοπικά του δάκτυλα, τόσο πιο μικρά και μαλακά
από εκείνα του παππού του, που ήταν όλο κάλους και
γρατσουνιές από το πολύ κέντημα, έψαχναν κάτι μέσα
στις τσέπες του.

‘Παππού, σε βλέπω ασπρόμαυρο. Γιατί;’

Ο γέρος χαμογέλασε πλατιά κι έγνεψε καταφατικά το
αρχαίο του κεφάλι. ‘Δεν είναι τίποτα παιδί μου, κοιμήσου.’

Το κολοκύθι από την άλλη μεριά, φούσκωνε ολοένα και
περισσότερο. Η γυαλιστερή του επιφάνεια έκανε περίεργα
παιχνίδια με το πορτοκαλί φως της πινακίδας από το
γκαράζ. Ο μικρός κοιτούσε μια το τεράστιο κολοκύθι,
μία τον παππού του και μία τα κορδόνια του.

Δεν μπορούσε να κρύψει την αμηχανία του και το κέρατο
στην πλάτη του άλλαζε χρώμα σαν τρελό…μια καφετί
σαν την πουτίγκα της θείας Αμαλίας, μια μπλε και μια
χρυσωπό. Τίποτα στο δωμάτιο δεν είχε μείνει το ίδιο: το ταβάνι
ήταν ο ουρανός σήμερα…βαμμένο μπλε, με μικρά
αστεράκια που φωσφόριζαν κι ένα πλαστικό φεγγάρι που
είχε κουρνιάσει στην γωνίτσα του. Οι τοίχοι είχαν φυτρώσει
φυλλαράκια και δεν μπορούσες να δεις πώς κάτω από την τεράστια
πράσινη μάζα τους ήταν κρυμμένο το γκρίζο χρώμα των τσιμεντόλιθων.
Το πιο περίεργο από όλα όμως ήταν το πάτωμα, που μέχρι
εχθές ήταν καλυμμένο στα χώματα και σήμερα ήταν μια
λίμνη από πηκτό, σκούρο αίμα.
‘Περίεργο,’ αναλογίστηκε ο νεκρός
άνθρωπος- σκιάχτρο ενώ ένα βαριεστημένο κοράκι του
ξερίζωνε ένα από τα μάτια του. ‘Δεν θυμάμαι από
πού ήρθε όλο αυτό το αίμα. Θεούλη μου! Τι απαίσιο
θέαμα! Θα πάω να το πω στη μαμά και δεν θα με
πιστεύει…’



Όταν το ρολόι χτύπησε τρεις, ο σάπιος κούκος βγήκε από
το σπιτάκι του και άρχισε να τραγουδάει χαρωπά το
αγαπημένο του τετράστιχο- εκείνο που είχε απαγγείλει
τόσες άλλες φορές σαν επικήδειο μπροστά από άπειρα
κατακρεουργημένα πτώματα.

Γαλάζιος ο Ουρανός, τι καθαρός που είναι!

This Week: LUXURIA (Lust)

Lust is usually thought of as involving obsessive or excessive thoughts or desires of a sexual nature. Unfulfilled lusts can lead to sexual or sociological compulsions and/or transgressions including (but obviously not limited to) sexual addiction, adultery, bestiality, and rape.

Dante's criterion was "excessive love of others," which therefore rendered love and devotion to God as secondary. However, lust and love are two different things; while a genuine, selfless love can represent the highest degree of development and feeling of community with others in a human relationship, Lust can be described as the excessive desire for sexual release. The other person can be therefore seen as a "means to an end" for the fulfillment of the subject's desires, and becomes thus objectified in the process. In Purgatorio, the penitent walks within flames to purge himself of lustful thoughts.

So, until the next tattoo, we're on Luxuria week (or tenday, depending on the healing process). That means no sex, of any kind. At this point i would like to apologize to my understanding, perfect girl for supporting me, through this completely dumb idea :) I'll make it up, hon, i promise.

Ghost Rider, Go Home

So I watched Ghost Rider last night.

Christ, what a mess.

Who the fuck casted Wes Bentley for Blackheart? Please be removed from the gene pool. Also: what’s with those terrible, terrible one-liners? Not to mention the naïve, child-like direction and script. My god, what a complete and utter waste. Cool effects aside, this one sucked big time.

It got me thinking though, about the heaps of super-hero movies we’ve seen these last years. I also wondered if I had caught all, or most, of them so I made myself another list, complete with ranking and comments for my viewing pleasure. This list includes only mainstream movies and/or blockbusters (mainly from DC and Marvel works), as there’s a lot of unknown and obscure adaptations out there. As an exception, I chose some independent heroes as well (from Dark Horse lines for example) and I also decided to exclude older (pre-2000) movies, which takes out the Batman trilogy, the first Superman movies and a few more.


Batman Begins (9/10) Captures perfectly the unique atmosphere and setting of the comic. Overall, the best super-hero film out there.
Blade (6/10) Not bad- but it set off an unpleasant streak of Goth-wannabes.
Blade II (6/10) A sequel on par with the first movie is commendable.
Blade Trinity (5/10) Strike three! This one had a much looser script and felt all wobbly.
Bloodrayne (4/10) Uwe Boll strikes again. Caution: a hot vampire as a protagonist never guarantees success.
Cat-woman (4/10) If it wasn’t for Hale Berry, this one would be even worse. Non-engaging script and extremely slow paced.
Constantine (6/10) Wrong man there- it’s a universal truth: Keanu Reeves just can’t act. Rest of the film was decent enough.
Daredevil (5/10) Decent attempt, again wrong protagonist.
Elektra (3/10) Extremely unfocused script, naïve storytelling. Great abs though.
Fantastic Four (4/10) Close, but no cigar. Wrong cast, wrong script.
Ghost Rider (2/10) Wrong everything, nice FX though.
Hellboy (7/10) There’s a case of correct casting. The unique personality of the setting was great on film.
Hulk (6/10) A great effort to see into the hero (in this case, the struggle of man vs beast) and some intelligent ideas. Relied heavily on FX though and that was its greatest mistake.
League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (7/10) That one got some bad reviews, but I liked it. It’s a very special and unique, wacky idea. If you don’t get it, you don’t get the film either.
Men in Black (5/10) Nice try at the time. You can’t watch it now.
Men in Black 2 (6/10) More solid script there, more polished character development.
Punisher (5/10) Decent try I think. It could have been better with a more dark and gritty approach.
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (6/10) Correct adaptation of the era’s mood- excellent cinematography. Angelina should never, ever try accents.
Sin City (8/10) Excellent cinematography and FX, marvelous adaptation of Frank Miller art. There were some slow points when everything grew slow and tedious, but the art direction single-handedly wins the day.
Spiderman (7/10) Very good pacing, great effects, near-perfect casting. It’s a classic.
Spiderman II (8/10) More polished than the first one.
Superman Returns (6/10) It could have been much better. Based on a smart idea, but on film, it feels fake and plastic.
V for Vendetta (8/10) Alternative and political, as it should be. Bad blood effects are my only beef here.
X-Men (7/10) My favorite franchise here, this one made many heads to turn. Best casting ever.
X-Men II (8/10) Even more political and thought-provoking, excellent cast.
X-Men III The Last Stand(7/10) This one took a dive, unfortunately, as the director changed on the way. Still a great film though.

It seems I have missed some (Ultraviolet, Aeon Flux) but I’m not really sure I want to watch those… maybe only if I wanted to complete my list :P

Ο Πάνας και τα Όσκαρ

Πήγα και είδα τον Πάνα χτες (Λαβύρινθος του Πάνα) στο Ιντεάλ. 6 υποψηφιότητες για Όσκαρ, πολλές μου φαίνονται. Ωραίο παραμύθι, αρκετά dark βερσιόν της Αλίκης, έξυπνος ο παραλληλισμός με τον εμφύλιο της Ισπανίας. Πολύ γλυκό το κοριτσάκι που έπαιζε, ήθελα λίγα παραπάνω στοιχεία φαντασίας πάντως: εκεί που σου δείχνει τον βάτραχο κάτω από το δέντρο, το πλάσμα που τρώει μωρά και φαίνεται να έχει ξεπηδήξει από κάτι μεταξύ Silent Hill και The Cell, έχεις την εντύπωση οτι σε περιμένουν ακόμα τρομερά concepts, φανταστικά πλάσματα και αλλόκοσμες δημιουργίες... αλλά η κατάσταση χαλαρώνει και προσγειώνεται αντί να ανυψωθεί σε υπερβατικές καταστάσεις. Ήθελα κι άλλες φανταστικές εικόνες. Η σκηνή με το μπουκάλι με σόκαρε, κυρίως γιατί δεν το περίμενα. Σχεδόν έστρεψα αλλού το βλέμμα μου. Αλλά το'χω.

Αρκετά καλά οπλισμένος λοιπόν, περιμένω τα Όσκαρ. Ας κάνω κι ένα recap να θυμηθώ τι ταινίες είδα και πώς τις βαθμολόγησα νοερά. Δεν είναι όλες οσκαρικές, αλλά να, μια που το σκέφτηκα, θα ήθελα κι εγώ να τις βάλω κάτω, να δω ποιες ταινίες έχω δει την σεζόν που μας πέρασε. ΕDIT: Τελικά τα Όσκαρ προτείνουν ως υποψήφιες ταινίες όσες έχουν κυκλοφορήσει την προηγούμενη χρονιά (Ιαν-Δεκ), οπότε μπορώ να προσθέσω μερικές ακόμα...

Και ναι, το ξέρω οτι πλάκωσαν πολλά νέα entries αυτές τις ημέρες- είναι η εβδομάδα Superbia και δεν κάνει να σνομπάρω τίποτα και κανέναν, οπότε βρίσκω και λίγο χρόνο παραπάνω για το blogάκι μου το κακόμοιρο και παραμελημένο.

Thinking Hats: ON

Σήμερα είναι η Παγκόσμια Ημέρα Σκέψης. Πρέπει να βάλουμε κάτω μερικά πράγματα και να σκεφτούμε.

Σκέφτομαι οτι η σημερινή ημέρα δεν έχει τίποτα το ξεχωριστό- πληροφοριακά, η Ημέρα Σκέψης εορτάζεται από τους προσκόπους. Ήμουν πρόσκοπος κάποτε, ωραία ήταν: εκδρομές, χαβαλές με τα πιτσιρίκια, αναπνέεις και λίγο οξυγόνο στας εξοχάς, ανεβαίνεις βουνά, βλέπεις δάση, ωραία πράγματα. Δεν περνούσα γριούλες, ούτε πουλούσα κουλουράκια.

Σκέφτομαι οτι μου έχουν λείψει κάποια πράγματα από εκείνη την εποχή, αλλά σκέφτομαι επίσης οτι ήταν μια άλλη ζωή εκείνη. Μου φαίνεται σαν να έχουν περάσει πολλά χρόνια και δεν με κατηγορώ, γιατί όντως έχουν περάσει πολλά (έστω αρκετά, 5-6 να'ναι ή πολλά λέω;) χρόνια. Τις προάλλες πέτυχα κάτι λυκόπουλα στο Μετρό, πλάκα είχαν... έπιασα μάλιστα τον εαυτό μου να κάνει τις κλασσικές κινήσεις του βαθμοφόρου/επιτηρητή: πρόσεχα μην χαθεί κάποιο ή μήπως δεν πιανόταν καλά από κάπου και φύγει σε κάποια απότομη επιτάχυνση, μην ενοχλήσουν τον κόσμο, μην πεταχτεί κάποιο έξω όταν άνοιγαν οι πόρτες στην στάση, αγριοκοίταξα και κάποιον γέρο που τα γλυκοκοίταζε.

Σκέφτομαι επίσης οτι γράφω στα ελληνικά κι έτσι χάλασα το ιντερνάσιοναλ λουκ. Ένα μεγάλο συγνώμη στο διεθνές κοινό μου.

Πολύ το πάω το ρεύμα αυτό :) Σίγουρα, κάπου κρυμμένο βαθιά μέσα μου έχω κι εγώ έναν μελαγχολικό ποιητή που αργοπεθαίνει, αλλά το όλο emo-thing (τουλάχιστον όπως παρουσιάζεται στα διάφορα ιντερνετικά μανιφεστέισονς του) με κάνει να χαμογελάω αντί να με βάζει σε σκέψεις.

This Week: SUPERBIA (Pride)

In almost every list Pride is considered the original and most serious of The Seven Deadly Sins, and indeed the ultimate source from which the others arise. It is identified as a desire to be more important or attractive than others, failing to give compliments to others though they may be deserving of them, and excessive love of self (especially holding self out of proper position toward God). Dante's definition was "love of self perverted to hatred and contempt for one's neighbour." In Jacob Bidermann's medieval miracle play, Cenodoxus, Pride is the deadliest of all the sins and leads directly to the damnation of the famed Doctor of Paris, Cenodoxus. In perhaps the most famous example, the story of Lucifer, Pride was what caused his Fall from Heaven, and his resultant transformation into Satan. Vanity and Narcissism are prime examples of this Sin. In the Divine Comedy, the penitent were forced to walk with their heads bowed while they were whipped in order to induce feelings of humility.

Obviously, we changed the drawing. The first Fallen Angel was too long. He also had a weird posture- much like just laying there, not falling from the skies. His face was also really beautiful, but very calm and peaceful. So we made another one on the spot- this one has a convincing falling posture, arms flailing and legs sprawled. His face is tilted back and can't be seen clearly, but for his gaping, screaming mouth.

Later, it ocurred to me. Although this is clearly symbolic and the picture is of a non-offensive, falling angel...well, technically, that is Lucifer, the first and most beloved angel that kinda became the Devil himself.....I had actually tattooed SATAN on my arm :P

Crap, i'll never hear the end of this :S

This Week: GULA (Gluttony)

Derived from the Latin gluttire, meaning to gulp down or swallow, Gluttony is the over-indulgence and over-consumption of food, drink, or intoxicants to the point of waste. Modern views identify Gluttony with an overindulgence of food and drink, though in the past any form of thoughtless excess could fall within the definition of this sin. Marked by unreasonable or unnecessary excess of consumption, Gluttony could also include certain forms of destructive behavior, especially for sport, or for its own sake. Substance abuse or binge drinking can be seen as examples of gluttony therefore. The penitents in the Purgatorio were forced to stand between two trees, unable to reach or eat the fruit hanging from either, and were thus described as having a starved appearance.

Depending on the culture, it can be seen as either a vice or a sign of status. The relative affluence of the society can affect this view both ways. A wealthy group might take pride in the security of having enough food to eat to show it off, but it could also result in a moral backlash when confronted with the reality of those less fortunate.

Early Church leaders (e.g., Thomas Aquinas) took a more expansive view of gluttony (Okholm 2000), arguing that it could also include an obsessive anticipation of meals, and the constant eating of delicacies and excessively costly foods. He went so far as to prepare a list of five ways to commit gluttony, including:

Praepropere - eating too soon
Laute - eating too expensively
Nimis - eating too much
Ardenter - eating too eagerly
Studiose - eating too daintily

This Week: ACEDIA (Sloth)

In Roman Catholicism, sloth (latin: accidia, pigritia) is one of the seven deadly sins, and is defined as spiritual and/or actual apathy or laziness, putting off what God asks you to do, or not doing it or anything at all. Acedia is a Latin word, from Greek akedia, literally meaning "absence of caring".

Sloth can also concern wasting due to lack of use or allowing entropy, expanding into almost any person, place, thing, skills, or intangible ideal that would require maintenance, refinement and/or support to continue to exist.

Several religious views concerning the need for one to work to support society and further gods plan and work by doing so; reflects that by not being active alone, you invite the desire to sin on its own. (“For Satan finds some mischief still for idle hands to do”. Isaac Watts)

The meaning of sloth as a vice closely follows the meaning of the Greek word "akedia": "absence of caring". A student who neglects her studies to pursue another interest, such as martial arts or filming, does not commit the sin of sloth. Perhaps she should restructure her priorities, but the student does not display a spiritual decay, a lack of interest in anything, and thus is not slothful. A student who took no interest in anything requiring great effort, but preferred to watch television and play video games, might be slothful.

Seven Weeks, Seven Sins

So today i'm at last starting my seven sins tattoo. It took about three or four months of research, planning, drawing to come this far... the final sketch is not 100% complete- some of the sins need some details, but the first two or three are complete. So, it begins.



When the idea first came to me of a seven sin tattoo, there was an accompanying insipiration of making this more symbolic, of letting it affect my life more. So i then thought that i could make one tattoo per week- and on that week i would display everything that goes against that sin's nature. Anyway, the original plan was meant as an exercise, a test, a thing to accompany this fine piece of art, to make it mean something more than a mere tattoo. Still toying with the whole idea, i was not sure how this translates into practical, everyday stuff- but a rough list can be made.

Acedia (sloth) A diligent week of not being idle/postponing.
No pointless ceiling-staring, no 6-hours of WoW, no excuses for not doing important stuff. Complete half-done things, errands, projects that have been too lazy to look after.

Gula (Gluttony) A week of fasting.
Last time was when i was 5. Still, i could use the detox :) No milk, oil, meat, fish, egg, animal-stuff.

Ira (wrath) A week of forgiveness.
I don't fully grasp how this can be implemented in my daily routine. I guess, just being calm no matter what happens. No violence of any sort. I hope i don't get into a car accident :P

Invidia (Envy) A week of kindness and pure admiration.
I don't fully grasp how this can be implemented in my daily routine, again. Maybe again, just a behaviour pattern of not being jealous, of being happy for one's accomplishments and/or belongings.

Luxuria (Lust) A week of no sex.
Of any kind. That's tough.

Avaritia (Greed)A week of sharing, giving.
Give away to the needy. Give the equivelant of my daily salary to random beggars? Is that going too much?

Superbia (Pride) A week of humbleness.
I don't fully grasp how this can be implemented in my daily routine, yet again. Maybe accept humbly any remarks, demands and generally be, er, humble.

It should be noted that i'm not a religious freak, not even a regilious person. I've been to church twice in the last 2 or 3 years. And no, i haven't watched SE7EN too many times :P These sins are not sins that will send you to hell and burn your psyche for eternity, duh... but, they are passions that can (if taken to extremes of course) consume us... and make this life a hell. This project is not religious (altough of course it's inspired by a religious theme) but a spiritual one, a homage to the everyday traps that await us.
